The Kansas City area's population typically grows about 10 percent each decade, and it is on pace to do that again this decade, with population growth of 7.2 percent so far (2000 through 2006). However, this level of growth puts Kansas City only in the third tier of population growth among its peers, along with Omaha and Minneapolis. Austin and Dallas are in the first tier, growing significantly faster than the rest (21.1 percent and 16.3 percent respectively). Portland, Denver, Salt Lake and Indianapolis are in the second tier, with around 10 percent growth. Only St. Louis is growing significantly slower than the Kansas City area.
